1982
The mosaic on Chkondideli Street adorns the facade of a complex that once housed two Soviet enterprises — the Mitana factory and the Sweet Country ("Tkbili Kvekana") confectionery plant. Created in 1982, it belongs to the late Soviet period of monumental art in Georgia, when decorating industrial buildings with mosaic panels was standard practice. The name of the artist has not yet been officially established — like many similar works, the mosaic awaits formal attribution.
The visual centrepiece of the composition is a peace dove surrounded by ornamental motifs. Such imagery was characteristic of late Soviet public art, where themes of peace and labour naturally aligned with the industrial purpose of the building. The mosaic is executed in relief technique — the figures have volume rather than being flat — giving the work a distinctly sculptural quality.
In August 2020, photographs of the damaged mosaic circulated on social media: railings and iron gates had been cut directly into the mosaic panel

About Project
Mosaics of Tbilisi is a visual project exploring the vanishing mosaics scattered across the city. Many of them are slowly razing or disappearing, often without documentation or preservation. Alongside the visuals, the project invites visitors to notice, explore, and reconnect with this fragile layer of Tbilisi’s urban memory
